B-Boy Photo Book: The Freestyle Collection by Vivian Hsu
POSTED ON December 3rd, 2008 BY PaulThe movement and explosiveness of b-boying is notoriously difficult to capture with photographs, or at least that’s what I tell myself as I find one good b-boy photo out of every hundred I take. But it’s not impossible to find someone who’s been willing to take on b-boying as a photography subject and come out on top, and Vivian Hsu is one of those people.
Like the previously mentioned Cypher, Vivian Hsu’s book The Freestyle Collection takes on b-boying as its subject. But where Cypher looks at b-boying in general, The Freestyle Collection focuses on the local Seattle hip hop community, and instead of the journalistic approach, Hsu’s photographs are clearly posed. That’s not to say that either approach is more worthwhile, as Hsu is able to capture some of the most impressive b-boy photographs I’ve seen.
According to the description, the book is not solely about b-boys and b-girls but focuses instead on elements of the Seattle hip-hop scene that have been an inspiration to her. But you can be sure to find plenty to make you happy, since four out of the six inspirations she lists are b-boy related.
