The New York Times Magazine has a great feature up on Brooklyn-based Daptone Records, which is home to a lot of artists whose songs get a lot of airplay at b-boy jams across the world. (Check out this track from the Budos Band or this one from Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings if you don’t believe me.)
Among other things, the article reveals that Sharon Jones wears a fanny pack that she once used to carry her handgun. The story also features the label’s co-owner, Gabriel Roth, talking about listening to James Brown’s “Hot Pants” while smoking weed for hours on end and working with Amy Winehouse.
From the story:
The album the Dap-Kings played on, “Back to Black,” sold 10 million copies. Roth won a Grammy Award for engineering and received a framed platinum record. He displayed the platinum record in the studio’s decrepit downstairs bathroom, propped up against the wall, a few inches from the toilet.
Couple that attitude along with Roth’s love for James Brown and vinyl, and it becomes obvious why his label’s music would appeal to b-boys and b-girls across the globe.
