First Comprehensive Report on B-Boy Injury Rate
POSTED ON April 23rd, 2009 BY Calvin

People have always hinted about this here and there, but it looks like some German researchers got fed up and just got the shit done. And by “shit” I mean they answered one of those questions that people always ask about on b-boy forums only to be met with responses like, “dont b a pusy”–how much does b-boying mess up your body?

According to their report in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, a lot.

From the story:

Not one of the professional breakers had an injury-free history, while only 4 percent of the amateurs did, the researchers report in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Wrist and hand fractures, thighbone fractures, slipped spinal discs and concussions were among the acute injuries study participants reported.

In addition, 70 percent said they’d suffered an overuse injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tenosynovitis, an inflammation of the sheath that surrounds a tendon.

It’s honestly not that surprising, since they were counting even the most minor injuries. It’d be interesting to see how these numbers compare with statistics for sports like gymnastics. It’s also worth mentioning that they only interviewed 144 b-boys and b-girls–far from being a beefy sample pool.

The article goes on to mention that b-boys don’t take very long breaks from training when they’re injured and that there hasn’t been any proof that wearing helmets and pads can lower injury risk. Again, no big surprise.

We all have stories of friends (or ourselves) who’ve messed up a limb or joint only to try and spin on the cast or something equally stupid/gangster (It usually happens after they’ve been watching others dance from the sidelines, all the while getting progressively more pissed off and saying things like “I could smoke everyone here,” until they finally just jump in).

That all being said, it’s still a really interesting read. Check it out here. And please, MSNBC/Reuters, don’t sue us. Believe me, I know, times suck for journalists now, but we’re just trying to provide some commentary and send some people your way.

i think its BS. 50 year old bboys have way more physical abilities than 50 year old regular people, right? is it better to mess up your body from over-use or from under-use? when i’m old i’d rather have a whak hip from bboying all my life then from not doing anything all my life… anyone wanna hit me back with a “word”…?

    Damn straight bro.
Let’s burn those non-bboys out there and show them what we got even with these injuries. We can take them anytime.

  3. BBoyStriker says:

Yeah but if your still in your early 20’s and your hurt, its depressing to not be able to do any moves that you should be able to. I hurt my shoulder (BAD) 3 months ago, and it still hasn’t healed up. Now i can barely do flares, elbow airflares, handhops, 90’s or 2000’s, airchairs, you get the picture. i cant do anything on that hurt arm.

  4. BBoy Genesis says:

Well I dislocated my elbow badly too, with hyperextension and subluxation. I can’t extend it fully and it’s still weak, but I execute moves with greater control and finesse than any non-bboy, and I ‘m willing to be I’ll still be able to when I’m old. BGirl Crazy Grandma is a perfect example. She’s 65 and has headspins.
