Stuff B-Boys Like: Arguing about Hong 10
POSTED ON April 26th, 2010 BY Calvin
There are a number of surefire ways to get b-boys really fired up. One is to play “The Mexican.” Another is to simply say, “Hong 10.”
In case you haven’t heard of Hong 10, the fact that he has his own Wikipedia page can probably tell you more about his fame than the actual page itself. In short, he’s been kind of a figurehead for b-boying (and powermoves, and the entire country of Korea) since he exploded onto the scene in the early 2000s.
In other words — whether it’s because of his skill, looks, reputation, timing, or what have you — it’s a fact: Hong 10 makes people lose their shit.
As always, this notoriety has come at a price, especially in the b-boy community, where there isn’t that much a difference between loving someone and loving to hate someone.
People generally tend to gravitate towards thinking Hong 10 epitomizes creativity and infallibility in b-boying (think stalkers, e-boys, fangirls, and so on), or they think he’s an overrated icon who embodies all that’s wrong with this generation of b-boys (think b-boy forum shit-talkers).
I’ve met people who come closing to fainting when Hong 10 takes his shirt off, and I’ve met people who would probably fight him if they had the chance. These two types of people usually don’t get along.
For the sake of full disclosure, we’ve had the chance to kick it with the guy a few times, and as far as I could tell, he’s a lot like a lot of other b-boys I’ve met — he likes food, music, friends, and so forth.
Why is it, then, that his powermoves are powerful enough to create rifts between even the closest of crew members?
Is it even really about Hong 10 the individual, or does the real issue have to do with the YouTube generation, the culture of celebrity, and the state of hip-hop — whatever that means?

In my opinion the dude is dope in battles, raw in the cypher, and from what I’ve seen he’s a funny guy. I don’t see how that can be hated on, but a lot of good things can be hated on. Jealousy and insecurity are the driving forces for internet shit talking. For me, until I can go toe to toe with the guy in the cypher and talk to him I can’t knock him. Skill wise he’s on a high level, that’s undeniable, I hope he keeps doing well and continues to help expand the bboy community and help it reach a higher level of quality.
I’m not hating on the guy. Not at all…
But i think it’s kind of to much how some people, newbie bboys/bgirls for an example, seem to idolize the guy. It’s just unhealthy. It’s okey to be influenced by someone but anything more then that and i’ll start slowly shakin my head to the sides when reading those comments.
he may have revolutionized the halo freeze, but that doesnt mean he invented it NOR is it called the hong10 freeze. that really annoys me lol
^^^so becasue jackhammers and crickets both stab in the same place, they should be called the same move? it’s a variation, and hong 10 is the one who did it, hence, the “hong10″ freeze, VARIATION of halo freeze. different names for different variations of the same move.
The naming of moves after people annoys me, cause who’s to say that someone else didn’t do it first? Hong10 was probably just the first person to have gotten it on YouTube.
too funny, actually here in Nicaragua, Central America, were we missed the foundation Hip Hop era, some, and I dunno if they can be called Bboys or not (not in my opinion) call the songs by the Bboy the saw in the video, so all of a sudden findin the artist and doin some musical research for your love for the music, went down to callin a song ”Lilou’s song” LMAO…funy but true, I dont think its bad either, because here not everyone has access to internet, or simply they dont do their homework… we all should thou, as a part of Hip Hop and the respect for the culture we live to…pz.
OMG HONG 10!!!!!!!!
4 me…he’s not good
10 me it, and maybe ull see things differently.
LOOK I do not speak your tongue I SPEAK PORTUGUESE SO I WANT TO TALK TO YOU AND THE BEST OF THE WORLD TALKING ABOUT HERE AND ADD ME ON MYSPACE Talita already ordered the TA CALL KISSES
Yo, as far as ‘Hating’ is concerned, Hiphop is competitive, and ‘Hating’ and Hiphop will always be. If you Don’t like it, become a hippie, they only hate on everyone who’s not a hippie.
And I really don’t know this dude, but I can see heads getting pissed at cats posting stuff like ‘Hong 10 Rockz,’ and the cat posting doesn’t even know him outside of youtube. Its a youtube thing, reminds me of when the backstreet boys came out, though I don’t see a reason to hate em cus other cats sweat em too much.
May Peace be to ya.
And yea, he didn’t invent that freeze, not sure who did, but saw it rocked plenty in the late 90′s, check Bebe & Boo rock for example.
One.
dude man when you think about it….
you can’t even do all those move that hong 10 does?
i gald that he breaks because i look up to him for about all these years…
keep uip the good work hong 10 and don’t let anyone put you down…
cause you can make it to the top…
hahaah your already on the top man…
and hey when are you going to battle physicx agian…
that i wanna see that again
it’ll be kool
lol. it’s plain to see that to all the newbies, hong10 is their justin bieber..i was all over hong10 2years ago like everyone else. but now that i’ve matured a lil bit more in the bboyin scene, i’ve come to appreciate the ppl who came before him alot more than the guy.
not to say i dont like the guy, i give him his props cuz he’s up there and cuz im not even into power that much, but im not gonna crap my pants or name my first kid after him cuz i saw him do some amazing shit..
I think that alot of the younger gen idolizes hong10 cuz of a lack of knoweledge when they first get into bboyin. i know i was amazed by all the dynamic power he did, but as i learned the history, and i saw interviews from older cats and tried to absorb what they said, you realize hong10 isnt the best bboy out ther. sure he’s up there today, but of all time, not really…
Respect to Hong10, the newbies who got what i even said, and to the rest of the amazing bboys & bgirls around the world.
