Top Rock City: Listening to the Messages in B-Boy Music
POSTED ON May 2nd, 2009 BY Calvin
In the latest Top Rock City update, YNOT drops some knowledge about getting into the proper mood of music in preparation for dancing to it.
From the entry:
A lot of the songs from the 70’s have meanings. It was a different time, with different struggles, and different people. Understanding what was going on then and listening to how they expressed their feelings through their music is how I understand the feeling I get when I hear it.
He goes on to give specific examples of some classic b-boy tracks that have a unifying theme of, well, unification.
It’s an interesting and helpful read, and it made me think how about how although so many b-boys know individual lines or lyrics for songs, the main point of those songs can become lost in the translation from the speaker to the cypher.
