DJ Lean Rock’s Mass Murda Break Mix Vol. 2
POSTED ON May 20th, 2008 BY Calvin
DJ Lean Rock must have a complicated schedule.
He’s earned a reputation as an accomplished b-boy, spun at events across the world, and modeled for Karmaloop. He represents Flava Squad, Floorlords, and Horsepower with ties in both Boston and Miami. He’s apparently one of the youngest international break DJs in the world, and his new mixtape, “Mass Murda Break Mix Vol. 2,” features shout outs from the likes of Cros One, Casper, Q-Bert, and Kid David.
It’s lucky for us, then, that Lean Rock keeps the formula for the 3-track, 50-minute mixtape simple: hard beats and raw breaks.
One of the several guests on the mixtape posits that Lean Rock has “the illest breaks you’ve never heard,” and indeed, between the scratches, you can almost already hear the internet b-boys clattering away at their keyboard as they type, ”wutz da song?”
The mixtape earns the title “Mass Murda” through its violently hard drums, skittering high hats, clean cuts, and funky horns and basslines. The only interruptions come from the guests themselves, with the shout-outs sometimes being distracting or unintelligible, though most of them are pleasantly gratifying (“Nigga, my dick dances on beat, nigga!”? Classic).
All in all, it’s the perfect soundtrack for any hardcore b-boy or b-girl who likes to rock hard beats sans frills or fanciness – the type of mixtape that your b-boy/b-girl friends will love, while the rest of your friends get pissed that you listen to it so much because they don’t “get it.”
Simple enough.
