1986: Skateboarding, B-Boy Style
POSTED ON November 23rd, 2008 BY Calvin

See more Mike Vallely videos at Shred or Die

I’ll be the first to admit that the only thing I know about skateboarding is that I suck at it. But it doesn’t take much of a stretch of the imagination to see the similarities between skateboarding and b-boying in terms of the movements, cultures and lifestyles.

That being said, this video of Mikey Vallely from “Along the Eastern Edge” is crazy. The influence from b-boying is obvious, from the “freezes” incorporating skateboards to the Run-DMC audio. Consider the fact that this is from 1986, and it’s all the more impressive.

Ridiculous!

I’m surprised that a flatland style of skateboarding that integrates breaking hasn’t evolved. There’s flatland BMX and definitely flatland rollerskating/inline skating.

I might have to go dust off my board now :)

I bet there are b-boys/skaters out there who’ve evolved it some, but they just may not be getting a lot of exposure. I always sucked at skating.
