Turn It Loose – B-Boy Documentary Trailer
POSTED ON February 26th, 2009 BY Calvin
Don’t get me wrong; I love b-boy movies, documentaries, and general footage as much as the next b-boy. I just hold a special place in my heart for a well-crafted trailer.
The first b-boy trailer that really changed my life was the one for Lords of the Floor 2 (beware of shady pop-ups if you click that link). The meaty yet intriguing combination of powerful music, editing, and everything else really floored me.
And now, there’s the trailer for “Turn it Loose”–a new documentary that follows six of the b-boys of the 2007 Red Bull BC One tournament in Soweto.
The cast includes Ben-J, Lilou, Hong 10, Taisuke, Ronnie, and RoxRite, whom we interviewed here. Something about me makes me swell up inside, and I have a feeling this documentary isn’t just going to be a straggling sibling behind last year’s “Inside the Circle” and “Planet B-Boy.”
Just from seeing the snippet with RoxRite, I can confidently predict that I’ll probably be bawling like an e-boy who just lost his Internet connection when I see this one.
The full-length documentary is the first of director Alastair Siddon, who has worked on music videos for artists like The Streets and Roots Manuva.
From this website:
It is the rookie who leads the audience into the film and into their world. Ben-J is from the ghettos of Dakar, Senegal and is competing in his first international competition. Through Ben-j we begin to understand the pressure competing in this event entails as he tries to cope with the expectations of every b-boy back in Senegal. Lilou, a French-Algerian BC ONE Champion from 2005, is fighting his own war. Whilst fasting for Ramadan he is attempting to restore his reputation in Soweto after losing in the first round in 2006. Then there is Roxrite, who is definitely American, despite the hardships he has endured living there since leaving Mexico when he was eight.
Taisuke, from Japan, is our youngest competitor at 17. Against his parents’ wishes, he left home in Nagasaki aged 16 to follow his dream of being the ultimate b-boy in Tokyo. Meanwhile, the current ultimate b-boy, the 2006 BC ONE champion, a Korean named Hong 10, is struggling to cope with the expectation of being the title-holder. This is unlike Ronnie, a professional b-boy from Las Vegas who has a very definite purpose for being there- to honour the loss of his dead brother, and avenge losing in last year’s final…
