Top Clips of the 2000s: Detours
POSTED ON December 23rd, 2009 BY CalvinIn the early 2000s, Paul and I road-tripped it to visit our friend Peter (also known as “DP”), who was attending school and dancing in Orlando.
After 10 or so hours of driving, however, the first thing we did when we arrived wasn’t to b-boy. Nor were the sunny beaches on our minds. Instead, we crowded around the TV in the darkened living room to watch Peter’s copy of Detours – An Experimental Dance Collaboration that I had heard so much about.
Yeah, yeah, nerdy, I know. But it didn’t disappoint.
While all these dudes (Kujo, Rawbzilla, Elsewhere and others) had already gained some level of notoriety for their abstract styles, Detours took a deep plunge into experimental dance to expose the crazy, off-the-wall stuff.
In other words, it was really, really dope. The guys who were typically those weird guys doing weird stuff as they slipped in and out of the fringes of cyphers were exposed as next-level artists and creators.
And to top it all off, it ended with the following segment (that has since become a bit of an Internet hit itself) showing the parallels between b-boying and other arts from around world — a sharply-executed juxtaposition that makes some interesting insights into the concept of biting. Years later, I’m still not sure why Crazy Legs is sitting on a basketball goal.
