IBE 2010: Best Online B-Boy Campaign Ever?

Well, it’s time to step up your event trailer steez. We don’t usually post a lot of event preview clips, but this is a must-see not just because it’s been blowing up Facebook pages and message boards across the Internet, but because it’s pretty freaking cool.

Reimagining Guy Ritchie’s “Take it to the Next Level” film for Nike, the first-person trailer by Tony from Style2ouf and Syl20 chronicles the life of a jet-setting b-boy who bounces from event to cypher to party to girl and so forth.

Featuring a range of well-known events and b-boys, like Just Do It, Hong 1o, and Lamine, this trailer taps into the wishful imaginations of the majority of b-boys across the world. Is that really what it’s like to be a “professional” b-boy? Well, that’s an entirely different subject altogether.

LXD Featured on TEDTalks

Is this the year of the LXD?

In addition its YouTube hype and performance at the Oscars, the group was featured on a recent episode of TEDTalks. The private non-profit TED (which stands for technology, entertainment and design) devotes itself to “ideas worth spending.” In other words, it’s a bunch of geniuses sitting around being, uh, geniuses.

The video above shows a live performance as well as short interview snippets. And this, readers, is how Kid David joined the ranks of Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Bill Gates and Richard Dawkins.

Cros1 Announces First Ever B-Boy Flash Mob

As we learned in our interview with him, there are few people on Cros1‘s level when it comes to the business of b-boying.

In his latest venture, the man behind Freestyle Session and Armory is putting together the world’s first ever b-boy flash mob, choreographed by Flo Master. It’s set to go down in LA at the end of this month.

Need to Smile? Juste Debout Has You Covered.

Sometimes the simplest things are all it takes to turn a bad day/week/month to a good one. I’ve been having a pretty hardcore string of bad luck lately, so this video came to me at just the right time.

Juste Debout is in the middle of a worldwide tour, and this video comes from its first stop in Japan. Although there is plenty of dancing, there isn’t any b-boying. But just bear with me. The sequence between two and three minutes in has to be one of the most heartwarming things I’ve seen in a long time in a dance video. If you’re a fan of kids, dancing, and horseplay, then you’ll be smiling like an idiot like I was.

The rest of the video is topnotch as well, but that one-minute stretch helped me end this week with a smile on my face.

Strife.tv Makes Crazy B-Boys Look Almost Normal

1. Report on all the weirdos dressed up in masks and Speedos while trying not to let them touch you.
2. Out-weird them all.

Thankfully, Strife.tv chose number two and put out a great video about a b-boy jam with absolutely no footage of b-boying in it at all. Because really, isn’t being weird and wearing masks what b-boying is all about?

It may the first and last one ever, but today is officially Trailer Tuesday at More Than A Stance. We don’t usually post this kind of stuff (we figure the countless b-boy forums and YouTube spammers already have that on lock), but these caught our eye, and I can’t resist sharing them.

First up, up above is a nice clip sent to us by the people at Breaker NYC. The title says it all; the video shows a compilation of New York City’s best b-boys, past and present. For those who don’t know, consider it a lesson, and for those who do, it’s a nice stroll down memory lane.

Okay, I lied. The other pick is actually a trilogy: a day-by-day series covering this year’s Notorious IBE. We had the honor of being flown out this year, and among others, we had the pleasure of getting to chill a bit with the good people from Style2ouf.

To really appreciate this series, consider that each video was filmed and edited and uploaded all the same day when there were already a million events happening. It’s nuts.

“No judges, only battle, and many b-boy shouts — that is why I love IBE,” writes Blue of Extreme Crew via e-mail. “I’m always excited about IBE.”

Simple enough — unlike his ridiculously complex power sets. Dang.

IBE Preview: Skeme Richards

You may not see him, but you can see what effect he has on b-boys.

If you wanted to, you could probably make a pretty good argument that a lot of b-boy jams nowadays look more like workout sessions at gyms. You stretch. You warm up. You do some physically demanding stuff. You go home.

Not so for The Notorious IBE, says DJ Skeme Richards (who we wrote about here, and who wrote some dope stuff himself here).

According to Skeme, who’s attended the event twice, IBE is more like a shopping center than a gym. A really, really dope shopping center.

“It’s kinda like a mall with different stores going on,” he says via a phone interview. “It encompasses a bunch of other events, and it’s not all under one roof. There are various buildings within a thirty second walk away. Each thing is going on all at the same time.”

This year, one such thing will be a discussion led by Skeme along with DJ Renegade. Skeme says discussion topics will include the state of DJing, solutions for DJ problems at jams, and unqualified DJs.

But of course, no mall is complete without some b-boys trying to sneak in a session in a corner of the food court. Skeme says IBE brings out the globe’s grimiest.

“They don’t blow things too far out of proportion as far as the glitz and glamour,” he says. “Its more so like, we’ve got footwork battles. And it’s really the top footwork guys there. It’s not like this is the popular guys. These are like, underground guys you might not have heard of, but the illest around. These are raw competitions in this event. They keep it real down to earth, with a wholesome feel.”

Wholesome. Raw. Un-gym-like. Word.

IBE Preview: Just Do It

Just Do It of Rugged Solutions has made a name for himself by battling and judging (and winning, duh) around the world. It also probably doesn’t hurt that he has one of the best b-boy names in history.

But for him, The Notorious IBE holds a greater significance than just being a big jam. IBE is one of the reasons he started dancing in the first place.

Rewind to 2003. According to Just Do It, he lacked skills. He didn’t check b-boy forums, and YouTube wasn’t around yet. He did, however, have a messed up knee, which still didn’t help much. So attending IBE was a lesson in inspiration.

“I saw Ardit doing nine 90s, which for me was like seeing someone doing a double backflip from standing,” Just Do It writes in an e-mail. “I saw Kido getting respect when he was like 13 or 14 years old. I had a chance to talk with b-boys on top of the game, and I was surprised everybody was cool, open to talk to the most unknown b-boys out there. I remember talking to Super Crew‘s Ben and Ronnie, Lamine, Machine, Renegade and lots of other guys that probably won’t remember any of it.

“Still, it’s moments like this that made me practice harder,” he continues. “I wanted to be like them — battling, winning, traveling. The things I remember about IBE aren’t the battles or who won what. It’s the people that stood out, that make everything so memorable — when you see Machine kill the beats like that in 2004, or Ben doing a flip from a German bboy in a freeze, cyphering with Free and Orb last year, or drinking vodka at the preparty with Top 9. For me, of course, the best memory is when I went out for the first time in [All Battles All], and you see so many people screaming, that’s gladiator shit!”

That’s why, Just Do It explains, IBE is so different from other events. The level of competition is high — battles like the All Battles All, Seven 2 Smoke and the footwork battle get intense, with hungry competitors and up-and-comers looking to make a name for themselves by going after bigger-name dancers.

At the same time, losing isn’t as big a deal. There is an abundance of things to do and people to meet.

By the end of it all, Just Do It says, all you’re left thinking about is how you’re going to save up money to attend again next year.

You get the feeling he could probably reminisce about IBE for hours, but Just Do It’s few minutes set aside for the interview are over. He’s got to get back to practicing, which is the main thing he does “all day” in the last days for the event.

After all, there may be some newer dancers in the audience who’ll need some inspiration themselves.

IBE Preview: Focus

It’s hard to talk about any form of hip-hop without mentioning freestyling. On the other hand, even people who “freestyle” always go through a few stages of pre-planning, especially if they plan to win battles.

Well, almost always.

The rules might be a little different if you’re Focus (click here to read our feature with him), and you essentially win an international footwork battle on a whim.

Or, at least, that’s kind of how it played out at last year’s IBE footwork battle.

“We we’re chilling in Amjad‘s room with A.T. and Hatsolo watching the Octagon battle, cyphering for a while, and then went out for a drink with no real intentions to enter any battles that day,” Focus writes in an e-mail. “When we came back, I felt good so I jumped in the footwork qualifiers with like 100 bboys from all over. More and more ideas kept coming in my mind as the competition went on, and I ended up winning the battle.”

Hey, whatever works. It’s definitely an impressive feat — but Focus says what’s impressive to him is the fact that IBE is able to juggle so many events at once.

“Besides being maybe the most international gathering for b-boys and b-girls in the world, IBE is dope because it gives something for everybody,” he says. “With this many people attending, you can still have the soulful feeling of a small jam because the main day’s divided in seven or eight venues.”

This year, he’s getting pumped about watching Hat Solo and A.T. hold it down on the Europe team for All Battles All. Of course, he’ll be holding it down himself all weekend with his fellow Flow-Mo crewmates as well.

Who knows — he may just win another battle on a whim.

Alien Ness: What’s the Most Important Event on the Planet?

Was that a condom he just threw? Yes, yes it was.

“IBE, to me, is probably the most important event on the planet,” Alien Ness says.

Anyone who’s read his interviews, watched his videos or bought his book can attest that Ness is not a man to mince words.

So he’s not hesitant to bestow such a title (with a “probably,” mind you) to The Notorious IBE. He’s even willing to interrupt an episode of Weeds with his wife to talk about it. In fact, he’ll be bringing his new wife with him to IBE as a last stop of a tour of his favorite places.

“You’ve got all these dope events, but IBE is the only one that actually gets who the people want to see or the names that people should see,” says Ness, who’s attended the event twice before.

“And they put them all under one roof. Now, IBE takes place in a whole city. You have about eight different venues with a couple thousand b-boys. You get to see people you don’t always get to see. They have loads of different competitions — you have loads of things to watch. They just really keep their ears and eyes to the street and see what’s hot and extend their welcome to everybody.”

Considering that Ness is constantly traveling the globe as a student and teacher of b-boying, it’s a pretty big endorsement. But he says that even as an established b-boy, there’s plenty to gain — and to look forward to — aside from just the dancing.

“From a business point of view, it’s one of the best places just to go to network and meet and greet,” he says. “Even the biggest name b-boy who doesn’t need exposure can go to IBE and benefit from something like that.”

It is, after all, how he met people he respects like Lamine and the mayor of Heerlen, the city where IBE takes place.

According to Ness, the mayor told him personally that though the city was initially wary of hosting a bunch of hip-hoppers and b-boys, everything went so smoothly that the okay was given for this year’s event even before last year’s IBE ended.

It’s even more “amazing,” Ness says, when you consider that the whole city, which is pretty small, slow-paced and conservative in the first place, is opening its doors to the culture with smiles.

“I’ve been to events where the event was amazing, but the area wasn’t too hot,” Ness explains. “The hotel managers wasn’t too crazy about b-boys being in their lobby doing airflares, or whatever it may be. But at IBE, the entire weekend is a complete experience from the minute you leave the plane. There’s no drama, no bullshit, no controversy. I think it’s like that because it’s all the love — all that love in the buildling, it’s too hard to break. That’s basically the best thing about IBE.”

Wait. Is Alien Ness — the same Alien Ness who threw a condom, smoked a joint and pretended to chop off heads in cyphers — really talking this much about love?

Well, yeah. People confuse a lot of things about Ness, but it’s clear that he knows what he loves. Need proof?

“I really, really, really, really, love the IBE,” he gushes. “I’ve been really really blessed that Tyrone and Mario have invited me back several times. It’s really hard to explain. I can tell you there are dope battles — thousands from Europe, Korea, The USA — in one spot. But certain things you have to experience to understand.”

IBE Preview: Bebe

Only time will tell how many rounds will Bebe need/want at IBE.

In case you haven’t already read our previous feature with him, Bebe is fiercely proud and protective when it comes to Ground Zero Crew. When you’re infamous for your aggressive battle style and for drop-kicking people who get in the way of your runs, people tend to assume you don’t play well with others.

But it shouldn’t come as any surprise that he’ll be holding it down for team USA at The Notorious IBE. He’s already taken part in a number of what he calls “unlikely collaborations” with the likes of Toyz, Mijo and Kevo and will be battling alongside even more American b-boys this weekend.

It also shouldn’t be any surprised that he seems most excited about what he’s most famous for: the battle.

“The energy is really important, and it’s definitely a battle event,” says Bebe, who’ll be taking part in IBE for the first time. “I’ve seen some of the footage of it, and it looks crazy. Everybody just battles everybody, apparently — a big, raw jam.”

And with Bebe in the house, there’s no telling how raw it’s going to get.

IBE Preview: Thesis

If you ever ask Thesis of Knuckleheads Cali/Them Team about his experiences at IBE 2008, be ready to cover the ears of any nearby children.

“Oh my god. It was the best fucking jam ever. In the world,” he says. He’s blurting into the phone at an airport in Utah waiting for a flight to Texas for a jam.

“It is! Dude! I’m not bullshitting, man,” he continues. “Notorious was at the perfect place, obviously. It was amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

But uh, what exactly about it was amazing?

“Honestly? The no judges,” the 17-year-old b-boy sensation says. “It’s hype because everyone is just going off. It’s ridiculous. It’s amazing that Tyrone and them and Mario actually got the whole city, and the mayor actually gave them whole city for that event. And we took advantage of it.”

When Thesis says he took advantage of it, he’s not just talking about the b-boying or the coffee shops (though he does crack a joke about it).

He says it’s the whole experience of the jam, from the atmosphere to the attitudes.

“It’s crazy how the people are just so nice out there and hella respectful,” he gushes. “And every other time I’ve been to Europe, I’ve always been getting into some drama — other than Holland.”

Oh, yeah, and Thesis digs the architecture. Wait, what?

“The architecture — every building is different color, and it’s fuckin’ tight,” he says.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he was feeling the b-boying and hip-hop there as well.

“In Holland, I love the way they dance. They’re way more funky. They use the music a lot more,” he says. “If you’re a b-boy and you do moves and shit and not moving to the music, there’s no reason for you going out there. You should feel every beat, every drum, every horn, every scratch — every little thing. I see that in Holland in the b-boy scene, and I respect that a lot.”

It’s a positive b-boy vibe that Thesis says is fueled in part by the other hip-hop events taking place along with the battles and cyphers.

“If you can bring all kinds of different hip-hop culture into one area, that’s what’s up,” he says. “If you didn’t have all different styles in that one event, it wouldn’t be IBE. It would just be a regular b-boy event.”

At this point, it’s starting to seem that Thesis may not ever want to come back from Holland if he attends IBE this year — as he is scheduled to help represent the United States in one of the event’s major battles.

“I love it,” he says. “It’s hella old, but it’s hella my kinda lifestyle.”

He’s winding down a bit, but as expected, he deploys another flurry of F-bombs when he’s asked what he’s looking forward to most at the event this year.

“Same as last year, but just more hype,” he says. “I already see teams, and that’ll be fucking crazy, man. I’m not expecting certain things. I know it’s gonna be fucking dope. And it’s its gonna be fresh.”

Ken Swift and Salah Interviews at TooMuchFlavour

I got an e-mail from TooMuchFlavour.co.uk a while ago, and I totally slept on the interviews that he pointed me to. To my credit, I think part of it was that I do most of my work on a laptop with a small screen, and due to the fact that the interviews are images and not text, I had to scroll sideways to read them. Actually, that just makes me sound lazy.

Regardless, the interviews are pretty well done, centering mostly on Ken Swift and Salah’s roles in an event called Breakin’ Convention which occurred from May 2 to 4 the UK. United Styles 5: A Step Towards Professional B-Boys?

Early this morning the newest United Styles event was submitted to us for posting. As I went through the routine of formatting it, something caught my eye: A $50,000 FIRST PLACE PRIZE

Fifty thousand dollars. That’s insane. A $5,000 first place prize is a big deal to me, but this just blows everything else away. Even Freestyle Session’s $20,000 prize looks small in comparison. I’m not sure how they are pulling that off, but with enough events out there like this every year, being a full-time b-boy might just become a legitimate career path.

The event has some pretty big sponsors including Scion, Pro-Keds, and Karmaloop.

NY Times Covers B-Boy Park Jams

Christie Z-Pabon, half of the husband/wife team of Tools of War (the other half is Popmaster Fabel, who helped start a pretty interesting discussion of our Kwikstep feature), is throwing a huge series of jams in the parks of NYC this summer which you can find in our Events section.

The New York Times has an interesting write-up about them, giving us a pretty good feeling of what the vibe is. I would love to be able to go to one of them, especially considering that it seems to have attracted some of the fore-fathers of hip-hop.

I also found this quote from Christie to be especially interesting:

“Fabel tells me that in the old days, B-boys wouldn’t use cardboard. That’s just an urban myth.”

Breakin’ Convention Features Junior, Ken Swift

It’s always interesting when you open your e-mail news alerts to see a familiar b-boy face. In this case, the New York Times prominently displayed a picture of France’s Junior here.

The story is in response to productions at Sadler’s Wells that include Breakin’ Convention, a poorly-named but interesting enough hip-hop dance theatre festival held in London. This year’s event featured a personal performance from Junior, about which the author wrote the following:

On May 4 at the Baylis Studio, Junior, a powerfully built young French Congolese man, gave a one-man show in which his feet often never met the ground. He specializes in off-kilter handstands; he can run on his hands; once he skittered across the stage by hopping in triplets — on alternate hands. At first I assumed he was never going to stand upright.

But later his feet played their part, memorably: he walks with a limp, and he turned this into a rhythmic dance virtue. He also talked about identity: having left Congo at 5, he can no longer speak his first language and has few memories of his native land. But “I dance, therefore I am,” he said; thanks to dance, he “became someone.”

The transition from cypher to stage isn’t always so pretty, but it seems like Junior has a pretty neat story to tell–not to mention a memorable way of telling it. You can watch a snippet of the performance here.

Even more impressive is the all-star roster the event pulls, including big names like Ken Swift.

Considering how dope the footage and the guests seem to be from the videos, it’s surprising that this event doesn’t get more shine from the b-boy community at large. Maybe it’s because b-boys are too b-boy to fit in well at a “dance theatre” event.

B-Line: Mare139′s B-Boy Drawings and Sculptures

Having designed awards for Rock Steady Crew’s Spy Award, Red Bull, and BET, world-famous graffiti artist Mare139 is now focusing his attention exclusively on the b-boy.

I’m really feeling the stripped-down, minimalistic style employed in the pictures I’ve seen. It takes a defiant step away from the cartoon-like b-boy caricatures that are so common in the culture without losing any of the movement or finesse.

“The B-Boy is the physical Graffiti artist, he is the lyrical and kinetic scratch, he is the break beat manifest, the most modern of all dancers.”

Fifty8 Gallery presents B-Line B-Boy Drawings and Sculpture the anticipated solo exhibition of renown sculptor, painter, Carlos Mare139 Rodriguez. Inspired by his childhood era connection to the B-Boy culture this unique series of works are a study in capturing the dynamic movement of the ‘break’ dancer in what he calls ‘linear still frames’. Mare139 provokes us to consider through his simplification of shapes and gestures what gravity defying kinetics are involved in the dance form.

Fascinated as a youth with close association to well known B-Boy crews, he learned the art from the insiders perspective and well understood the text and physical nature of B-Boying by being present at countless ‘jams’ or ‘battles’. Correlating the dance to the abstracted letter forms of graffiti was shared among his circle of influence, several whom were also graffiti artists, among them Doze Green.
