Oh My Got!: Nike’s Huarache Dance LowPOSTED ON February 24th, 2010 BY Calvin

Image from Sneaker News
Yeah, yeah, this isn’t Nike’s first foray into the b-boy/b-girl market, and Nike is a major corporation that already makes tons of money, and all that, but — wow. Look at them.
I don’t even really like Nikes that much. But the legacy (and comfort!) of the already-legendary Huaraches — combined with something-or-another that gives it the “dance” label and a clean redesign? Sign me up.
I’m even willing to forgive the fact that Zappos describes them by saying, “Let ‘em bite your moves, your style and even your kicks—but no one’s going to be able to rock these Nike® Huarache Dance Low sneakers like you princess!” Wait, what? Still fresh!

Molotow’s Headspin SprayPOSTED ON January 30th, 2010 BY Calvin

Image from UGHH
The first time I saw somebody doing headspins, I just assumed it was some kind of trick. I was just an elementary school kid watching some weird public service announcement on TV with a song pronouncing that “nobody wants to be a dumb-dumb,” but even then I felt smart enough to discern that the idea of people spinning on their heads was absurd.

My 2009 B-Boy Holiday WishlistPOSTED ON December 26th, 2009 BY Calvin

Looking to blow your new holiday cash on some new b-boy paraphernalia? No? You’re still broke? Well, me too. But here’s my list* anyway. A b-boy can dream, right?
10. Godkee’s “Rock Creek Park” shirt (shown above): Well, it turns out that not only does Nasty Ray know every hip-hop-related dance style ever, but he also has good taste when it comes to clothing design. Clean, understated monochromatic type and subtle bird silhouettes set this apart from a sea of schizophrenic designs with every color and old school hip-hop reference possible. It’s the details that count. Click here for our previous coverage and here for the Godkee site.

Caked Out’s “It’s the Shoes II” TeePOSTED ON October 1st, 2009 BY Calvin

I have to come clean: the first time I heard the Lords of the Underground’s track “Chief Rocka,” I thought the lyrics were saying “cheese cracker.”
Come to think of it, I probably thought that for at least a year or two.
Anyway, it’s a b-boy classic, not to mention a hip-hop classic from the golden era, and it never ceases to get people hyped up in a battle or cypher. And now Caked Out takes inspiration from it in this clean new tee that might help people understand how you keep it so funky:
Now fam a lam I’ll be damned, slam jams the weak
Could it be the skunk weed that makes us oh so funky?
Now hold it, let me choose, couldn’t be the booze
No it’s the shoes (the shoes?) It’s gotta be the shoes!
Click the jump to see the tee in another colorway and to check out the song’s original music video featuring Kwikstep.

Puma Releases “Face Lace” SuedePOSTED ON September 23rd, 2009 BY Calvin

Largely considered a classic in the hip-hop community, the Puma Suede has managed to step its way onto the feet and into the hearts of many a b-boy and b-girl across the globe.
In one of its latest (and arguably dopest) manifestations, the shoe pays homage to Run-DMC with a laceless slip-on version. Instead, the Puma form stripe on the side takes the shape of a fat lace. Whoooa.

Slow Motion Film B-Boy Sculpture. Huh?POSTED ON August 4th, 2009 BY Calvin

These pieces take the aesthetic of movements on slow motion film and apply them to sculptures. In other words, look how dope that flare looks!
I thought these were all toys with moving parts at first. If that were the case, and I managed to get my hands on one, I don’t think anyone would ever see me again because I’d never leave my house.

Sneak Peek: New Nike Prototype ShoesPOSTED ON July 18th, 2009 BY Calvin

A source showed us some fresh (literally and figuratively) Nikes that are said to be made specially for b-boying. He requested anonymity, but suffice it to say that it’s a world-famous b-boy who deserves dope free shoes.
And where, you might ask, are we meeting people who get free Nike prototype shoes?
Uh, stay tuned.

B-Boy LunchboxPOSTED ON June 27th, 2009 BY Calvin

What better way to prove that b-boying truly has gone “mainstream” than a b-boy lunchbox from Wal-Mart? (Thanks, Stephanie.) There have a been a lot of weird b-boy “products” over the years, but has to be one of the weirdest I’ve seen.
It has all the expected b-boying insignia: a boombox and cassettes and a record, just in case the first two didn’t suffice, and silhouettes of b-boys.
The only thing it’s missing? The default silhouette of a guy doing a y-kick. I’d try to sell it, but then I wouldn’t have anything to keep my Lunchables cold.

Hello My Name is Break DancePOSTED ON June 21st, 2009 BY Calvin

I was going through my old pictures and found this flick of what might be the second lamest b-boy shirt of all time (click here for the number one selection). I don’t think anyone would want this, but I tagged it with “Things I Want” for the hell of it (sorry Paul).
It’s a combination of some of the most “streetwear” elements ever: half-assed all-over print, records, cassette tapes, headphones and an angry skull with a top hat thrown in for good measure. But wait! To make this shirt legitimately b-boy, there is the default “guy doing a y-kick” image as well as my personal favorite — a name tag that says “HELLO MY NAME IS BREAK DANCE.”
Sure, learning certain b-boy moves can be difficult, but what would be really impressive is if someone managed to make crap like this popular in the b-boy community.
